The
St Giles Hospice Lottery was formed in 1997, after the charity was turned
down for a National Lottery grant of just £190,000 to fund an expansion
to its services.
The hospice decided to take
matters into its own hands and set up a fundraising lottery, and the launch
sparked a phenomenal response from the public.
It's amazing that in just ten
years the weekly draw has raised more than £7m, thanks entirely
to the generosity of thousands of players from across the region.
There's no question that St Giles relies heavily
on the profits from the weekly draw - they play an important part in ensuring
the continued care of patients living with cancer and other serious illnesses.
