The department's programme covers both specialist and non-specialist fields, and caters for a wide range of students including those from health, social work, and education. A diploma level course in lymphoedema care, validated by Staffordshire University, was launched in 2002. The course, offered in partnership with the hospice's Lymphoedema Clinic, is taught at St Giles with practical experience gained in the clinic. Hospice staff also teach palliative care on other university courses and host a programme of visits by students to the hospice.
Through the Education Department students and staff now benefit from an enhanced and improved library facility, and the library catalogue has been computerised by a team of volunteers.
