The service prevents patients nearing the end of their life from needing to be admitted to the hospice or a hospital. Instead, the much-valued service allows them to be cared for in the familiar and reassuring surroundings of their own home, for 24 hours a day where necessary. Hospice at Home may also be able to provide respite for families and friends caring for loved ones when their illness is at an earlier stage. The programme was launched in June 2002 as a 12-month pilot operating in the Cannock and Rugeley areas. It has proved so successful - both in terms of demand and generating additional support - that Hospice at Home is continuing as an ongoing service in the area. The intention is to expand the initiative into other areas in the future, if new sources of income can be found to meet the cost. If you feel that the service may be of benefit to you, or are a health professional looking to refer a patient to the service, please contact us regarding our Hospice at Home service.
