The In-Patient Unit fulfils a central role in the services offered by St Giles Hospice.

The 18-bed unit offers specialist support for those patients who are too ill to be cared for at home.

Many stay for a short time to have their symptoms controlled and their condition stabilised, before returning home.

Other patients receive the special care for which St Giles is renowned during the final stages of their illness.

The specialist team of doctors and nurses offers individual care directly tailored to the requirements of each patient, responding quickly to their needs.

Despite the fact that many patients are very seriously ill, staff pride themselves on making sure that the unit - like the rest of the hospice - is a place that is about living, rather than dying.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and patients - understandably anxious about their condition - are quickly put at their ease.
