The hospice continues to be one of the forerunners in the care of the condition, a painful swelling that can affect any part of the body, but most commonly develops in the arms or legs. The dedicated clinic exists to provide both physical and psychological support to help patients maintain their quality of life and sustain on-going independence. Specialist nurses offer advice and treatment so that maximum improvement and long-term control of this distressing condition can be achieved. The service also offers two special support groups. The Healthy Eating Group aims to help the high proportion of lymphoedema sufferers who are overweight, while a further group provides psychological support to younger women with primary lymphoedema. The clinic deals with more than 4,000 patient appointments every year and the service's reputation means it attracts nearly 300 placements from health professionals worldwide.
