Local Charity opens new Bookshop in Sutton Coldfield

Shops' General Manager Lynwen Truesdale takes a break from the bookshop opening1st July 2004

Local charity St Giles Hospice has launched its latest exciting fundraising venture – a specialist bookshop in Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield.

Located at 284a Lichfield Road, the shop opened it doors for the first time on Thursday (1st July).

The bookshop joins the charity’s established network of twelve other stores across the region, and becomes St Giles’ fifth store in Sutton Coldfield. It will help to raise funds to support St Giles’ valuable work improving the lives of local people living with cancer and other serious illnesses.

The new shop stocks a wide choice of high-quality, second-hand books including fiction, children’s titles,
leisure, literature, travel, the arts, reference, and antiquarian volumes.

In addition, a selection of videos, CDs, DVDs, pictures, clocks, cameras, and a range of new goods including stationery, gifts and greetings cards is also available.

St Giles Hospice Shops General Manager Lynwen Truesdale explained: “We are delighted to open our new bookshop in Mere Green, which will continue our tradition of offering high-quality goods at value for money prices.

“Everyone loves a good book, and customers will be spoilt for choice. There really is something to appeal to every taste.

“St Giles Hospice does a tremendous job, but we still can’t care for everyone who wants our help, and more funds are always needed.

“As such, we are appealing to everyone to support the shop – whether by buying or donating items we can sell.

“We’re also keen to hear from members of the public who’d like to volunteer to help in the shop, and particularly from anyone who can offer us specialist support in valuing books.”

St Giles’ twelve other charity shops across the region will continue to sell a selection of books.

The bookshop is open Monday to Saturday from 9.15am – 4.30pm, and further information is available by calling staff and volunteers on 0121 308 0006.

Donations of books and any other high-quality items that can be sold, can be made at any hospice shop, the details of which are as follows:

St Giles Hospice Shops play a vital role in funding the care offered by the hospice, a registered charity based near Lichfield.

The thirteen shops are located in major towns throughout the hospice's patient catchment area, which ranges from Ashby de la Zouch and Atherstone in the east, to Cannock and Walsall in the west – and from Burton and Uttoxeter in the north, to Sutton Coldfield and Coleshill in the south.

In addition, a clothing warehouse for donations and a furniture warehouse offering a wide range of high-quality furniture at value-for-money prices, are based in Shenstone, near Lichfield. A selection of furniture is also available at the Cannock and Wylde Green shops.

Last year the hospice shops raised a total of £586,000 – and every penny is desperately needed by St Giles. The charity spends over £4million caring for local people living with cancer and other serious illnesses, as well as providing support for their families and carers, and relies heavily on the support of local people to enable its valuable work to continue.
