St Giles Solstice Walk

From left to right: Chris Edwards, Lyn Hunter, Ann Ward, Joyce Stewart and Anne SmithWomen can walk their way through the night to raise vital funds for St Giles Hospice.

The new event – called the Solstice Walk - will take place on the night of June 23rd/24th 2007 around Lichfield.

Participants will complete two circuits of the six-mile route to raise sponsorship for hospice funds.

Organisers have just opened the register for women wishing to take part but with the number of walkers limited, people will have to book early to secure their place.

Sarah Shelton, Community Fundraiser for St Giles Hospice, explained:

“This is a brand new event for the hospice and promises to be lots of fun.

“We are encouraging women to walk through the night, at a pace to suit them, as well as making new friends along the way.

“St Giles chose this type of event because women of all ages and levels of fitness can take part, and it empowers women to be able to go out after dark and walk through the streets safely.

“We hope to see as many people there as possible on the night – women taking part and their partners coming along to support them.

“Although men won’t be able to take part in the walk itself, we would like them to support it by acting as marshals to ensure the safety of the women taking part.”

Before the walkers set off on the night, balloons will be released into the sky and for a donation of £2, a personal message can be attached to a balloon.

The event will start at 10pm on Saturday, June 23rd at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre on Eastern Avenue, Lichfield. Entry is £12 per walker and everyone who signs up will be sent a Solstice Walk sponsorship pack, which includes a map of the route, safety guidelines and details of how they can raise sponsorship money.

Sarah continues:“1st Sports Events have masterminded the course and have been vital in planning the event.

“We have already arranged for the Army Training Regiment in Lichfield to provide us with support around the circuit, medical back-up from St John Ambulance, and the support of the local police.

“Aqua Direct have provided ‘Chase’ bottled water for all the walkers and Friary Grange Leisure Centre are opening their centre for walkers to use on the night.

“We also hope that pubs along the route will support us by opening up to let people use their facilities.”

The walk is non-competitive and open to women aged 16 and above.
