St Giles Trustees

St Giles Hospice's Board of Trustees is made up of members of the community which the charity serves.

The role of the Trustees is to provide strategic direction for the Hospice and to ensure the local community is represented in its aim to meets its objectives while sticking to its core philosophy and values.

The Board of Trustees includes a number of Committees with responsibility for the different areas of the Hospice's work.

  • Simon James
    • Simon James

      Simon James was elected as a Trustee in 2001 and became Chairman in September 2011.

      He is a member of the Clinical Governance Committee and also a Director of St Giles Hospice Developments Ltd, St Giles Hospice (Promotions) Ltd, St Giles Hospice Shops Ltd and St Giles Care Agency.

      Simon is the senior partner of Ansons LLP Solicitors, of Lichfield and Cannock. He holds a number of key roles within the local community including: warden of Lichfield Conduit Lands Trust, clerk of Lichfield Municipal Charities and chairman of trustees of the HE and CT Robinson Charitable Trust for Lokono Arawak and Carib Indians.

  • Peter Durrant
    • Peter Durrant

      Peter Durrant became a Trustee in 1996 and was Chairman from September 2007 until September 2011. He is currently Deputy Chairman of the Board. He is also Chairman of the Estates and Facilities Governance Committee.

      Peter's involvement with St Giles began in 1987 when he joined as a volunteer member of the Fundraising Committee.

      Formerly personnel director at Pirelli Tyres UK in Burton on Trent, and subsequently a self-employed career coach and Business Link mentor, he served for many years on the board of Burton College and is the independent trustee for a local occupational pension scheme.

      Peter is a lay member of the Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral.

  • Alison Fowler
    • Alison Fowler

      Alison Fowler was elected a Trustee of St Giles in 2011. She has been involved in Hospice charity work since 2003, most recently as a trustee of the Walsall Hospice Charity. She is a member of the charity's Estates and Facilities Governance Committee.

      Alison runs her own practice that provides specialist corporate business, service redesign and commissioning support, as well as managing complex service and capital building projects for the NHS, Department of Health and other public sector clients across England and Wales.

      She is a Commercial Practice Chartered Surveyor, with a Masters Degree in Business Administration and is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Alison is also actively involved working with the 3rd Sector in Sandwell.

  • Adrian Thompson
    • Adrian Thompson

      Surgeon Adrian Thompson has been a Trustee since February 2002. He is a member of the charity's Clinical Governance Committee.

      Adrian is Consultant ENT Surgeon at Queens Hospital, Burton upon Trent, chair of the Surgical Risk Committee and a member of the Surgical Governance group for Burton Hospital.

      He has a special interest in head and neck oncology and thyroid cancer.

      Outside work, Adrian is well known for his poetry evenings.

  • Bernard Kumeta
    • Bernard Kumeta

      Bernard Kumeta joined the Trustees in 2003 and is Chairman of the Finance Governance Committee.

  • Charles Theaker
    • Charles Theaker

      Charles Theaker has been a Trustee since 2000. His initial involvement with St Giles was in helping to recruit Peter Holliday as Chief Executive in his role as recruitment consultant.

      He is currently Chairman of the Human Resources Governance Committee. Charles now runs a small property business and is also a magistrate on the Burton upon Trent and Tamworth bench.

  • David Platt
    • David Platt

      David Platt became a Trustee in 1996. He was Chairman of the Board from 2003 to 2007, and Deputy Chairman from 1999 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2009.

      He is currently a member of the Finance Governance Committee, Chairman of St Giles Hospice Developments Ltd and a Director of St Giles Hospice Shops Ltd.

      David had a long-standing association with St Giles prior to becoming a trustee, having chaired an employees' charity fund at the brewery where he worked which supported St Giles.

  • Joanne Hoffman
    • Joanne Hoffman

      Joanne Hoffman became a Trustee in 2008 and is Chair of the Fundraising Governance Committee.

      Jo runs her own marketing, communications and PR consultancy, Hoffman Marketing Ltd, providing a marketing service to a selection of clients from a number of sectors across the UK.

      She is a retail marketing graduate of Manchester University and a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Jo has served as a Justice of the Peace at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates Court since 2005.

  • Margaret Wood
    • Margaret Wood

      Margaret Wood was elected as a Trustee in 2011, previously having served as Trustee and Vice-Chair on the Board of Trustees of Walsall Hospice, for which she also chaired the Fundraising Management Committee. She is a member of the charity's Fundraising Governance Committee.

      Margaret is passionate about ensuring ‘the right kind of care’ is given in the community. As Chair of Walsall  Patient  Advisory Cancer Team she continues  to work voluntarily  with patients, carers and health professionals to build on further improvements in cancer services for patients and their families.

      In addition to other interests, Margaret, a retired Primary school Head-Teacher, continues as a voluntary advisor for Home-Start West Midlands and is an active member of Walsall’s University of the Third Age.

  • Mary Adams
    • Mary Adams

      Mary Adams has been a Trustee since 1993. Her special interest is clinical governance and she is Chairman of that Committee.

      Mary first became involved with the Hospice in her official capacity as chief nursing officer and director of health care standards for South East Staffordshire Health Authority.

  • Dr Robert Horton
    • Dr Robert Horton

      Dr Robert Horton joined the Board of Trustees in 1993. He was Chairman from 1999 to 2003 and is a Director of St Giles Hospice Promotions, Developments and Care Agency companies, and a member of the Clinical Governance and Human Resource Governance Committees.

      Rob, now retired, was previously a GP in Alrewas, a post he held for over 30 years.

      A keen sportsman, with a passion for the mountains, he has taken part in many fund-raising activities for St Giles including running marathons and sky-diving.

  • Simon Fisher
    • Simon Fisher

      Simon Fisher was elected as a Trustee in 2011, and is Chair of the Walsall Hospice Trading Company. He is a member of the charity's Finance Governance Committee.

      Simon is a member of the Midcounties Co-operative Executive Management Team with responsibility for the Funeral Group. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and a member of the Society’s Diversity Steering Group.

      He is involved with a number of other local organisations, including Donnington and Trench Learners Trust in Telford, where he is a board member, and the National Association of Funeral Directors, where he is an executive member and 2nd vice president. Simon is also a board member of Walsall Chamber of Commerce.
