Working with groups : building the core skills of group facilitation and considering their application within different settings, such as managing family meetings; team meetings; and support groups.

Facilitated by Jonathan Hartley and Nikki Archer, St Giles Hospice Director of Supportive Care.

How often do you feel overwhelmed, bored or impatient when running a group or facilitating a meeting? Many people given the role of facilitator, without support or training, do their best to prepare by organising the time, venue and list of issues to discuss – then hope the rest will fall into place. Facilitation of groups, whether they be in the guise of team meetings, family meetings or support groups of various sorts is a craft and there is a lot to it! Using good quality processes with self-awareness and emotional resilience makes a powerful difference when you facilitate any group.

Jonathan Hartley combines a private practice as a registered accredited counsellor, group facilitator, supervisor, and trainer, with a part-time role as Bereavement Coordinator/Counsellor at St Joseph’s Hospice Hackney.

Formerly Director of the Bereavement Care Standards: UK Project, he continues to engage in national policy initiatives to support good practice in bereavement care, most recently as a member of a project to develop national guidelines for support groups, as Project Lead developing an audit tool for hospice and palliative care bereavement services, and as a member of the Bereavement Assessment and Evaluation Task Group.

This course will enable you to:

  • consider your role as a facilitator within different settings,
  • learn how to set up and facilitate different types of groups,
  • consider your preferred facilitation style and how it can be adapted to meet the needs of different groups
  • develop awareness of group facilitation and how to manage challenging situations
