A local woman whose husband spent his final weeks receiving care at St Giles Hospice is calling on people to support their weekly fundraising lottery.

Jo Wain-Doughty joined the St Giles Hospice lottery as a way of giving something back to St Giles for supporting her family in times of need.

Jo said: “St Giles looks after the whole family, not just the patient. Everyone was so friendly and took the time to chat with us to put us at our ease when St Giles looked after Gary. I now encourage people to support the hospice in any way they can.”

The family first encountered St Giles after Jo’s husband, Gary, was cared for in the last six weeks of his life. After Gary died, the family also received bereavement support.

Jo said: “St Giles was there to support Gary, myself and our girls when we needed it most. We will be forever grateful for this. Having St Giles still there for us with bereavement support, for myself and our girls, even after Gary passed away, made a real difference.

“‘Hospice’ was always a word that I feared but my experience with St Giles has changed that. I would like to thank everyone who plays the lottery for making a difference to families like ours.”

As a thank you for making a commitment to play the lottery on a weekly basis, every player who joins the St Giles Hospice lottery also receives a ‘Promise Card’, which offers savings at more than 130 supporting shops and outlets across the region.

Elinor Eustace, Income Generation Director at St Giles, said “The continued support of our lottery players is vital in keeping our services running. Thank you to our community for being there for our patients and their families when they need us most. Every ticket sold helps us to continue to be there for local people and their families, just like Jo and Gary.

“Our weekly lottery generates over £750,000 for the hospice every year and it’s still just a pound a week to play. Players have the chance to win 155 weekly prizes, including a weekly jackpot of £1,000 and up to £20,000 in a rollover draw.”
