A brother and sister whose mother spent the final weeks of her life at St Giles Hospice are calling on people to support the local charity by taking part in its Christmas Raffle.

David  MacNulty and Gillian Cox’s mother, Beryl, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August 2002 and spent the final weeks of her life being cared for by St Giles Hospice.

Twenty years on from the death of their mother, David and Gillian are still supporting the hospice in whatever way they can – including playing the Raffle. David recently won the second prize of £2,000 in St Giles Hospice’s Summer Raffle.

Gillian said: “Mum was a fantastic woman – she was full of fun, really smart and all about working hard and looking after her family. Our dad died when I was 3 years old, so mum brought me and my two brothers up on her own.”

Beryl was admitted to St Giles Hospice in October 2002, and the family described the care given to their mother as ‘phenomenal’.

David said: “Nothing was ever too much for the staff at St Giles, they really went above and beyond for us all. They always wanted mum to be as comfortable as she could be. We put pictures up around mum’s room so she had family and friends and happy memories surrounding her.

“Gillian was also able to stay over when mum was in the hospice, and she found all of the staff really supportive. I hope people will support St Giles this festive season by playing the Christmas Raffle. The money raised will help give other families like ours the care, space and support that St Giles provides throughout the year.”

Tickets for the hospice Christmas Raffle are now on sale at £1 each and prizes up for grabs include a first prize of £8,000, second prize of £2,000 and third prize of £1,000, as well as much more and 25 runner-up prizes.

St Giles Hospice Income Generation Director, Elinor Eustace, said: “The St Giles Hospice Christmas Raffle is a fantastic way for our supporters to raise vital funds for our patients and their families.

“For everyone who buys a ticket, there is the chance to win an incredible £8,000 – a truly fantastic way to start the new year! There are also many other prizes up for grabs, as well as extra prizes for people who buy their tickets early!

“Every ticket sold in our raffle will help us to continue to be there for local families, like David and Gillian’s, when they need us most – the money raised through our raffles makes such a difference to the care we can provide.”
