An intrepid traveller, who is preparing to spend three years exploring the world, is celebrating the perfect send-off after coming up lucky on the St Giles Hospice lottery draw.
Sarah Tubb, aged 53, scooped £1,000 on the hospice lottery last month (March) and will be using her winnings to help fund her trip around the globe with her husband John and Cocker Spaniel Archie. She had just finished her job of 20 years as a secretary at Catton Hall, in Staffordshire, when she received the good news from St Giles Hospice.
Sarah said: “I was stunned when they told me I had won the lottery – it was such a lovely surprise and came at the perfect time!
“My husband and I are finishing our jobs because John is retiring and we are planning to travel around the world for three years. The lottery winnings will be a great boost to our travel fund. It’s a wonderful start to our journey. It was such a lovely surprise and such a bonus – I was genuinely over the moon and I’ve been telling everyone about it all week.”
Sarah and John, who live in Sutton Coldfield, have bought a motor home, named Eric, and are planning to explore the UK this summer before setting their sights further afield. “We are starting in the UK because there’s so much of the country we haven’t seen. After the summer we’ll be heading into Europe and beyond,” added Sarah.
She began playing the St Giles Hospice Lottery in 2008 after deciding not to send Christmas cards and to spend the money on a worthy cause instead.
Sarah said: “I remember when St Giles Hospice was first being built all those years ago, and I thought it was such a much-needed service. It is such a personal and significant charity in Lichfield and across the region and it touches the lives of so many people.
“St Giles was a great support to a close friend of mine and her family when she lost her husband to cancer. All the staff within St Giles do such a wonderful job under such difficult circumstances. I feel very blessed that this service is here for my family and friends and for the people of the Midlands – thank you St Giles.”
St Giles Hospice Lottery Manager, Alison Jerram, said: “It’s a wonderful part of our job to be able to ring someone with the good news of a lottery win and it always makes it extra special when they tell you about exciting plans they have for their winnings.
“Sarah has been a loyal and generous supporter of St Giles Hospice for more than a decade and we’re delighted that she has won the lottery just before setting off on her trip. We’d like to wish Sarah and John ‘Bon Voyage’ and hope they will enjoy every minute of their worldwide adventure.
“We are so grateful to everybody who plays the hospice lottery. Since it started, our lottery has raised over £18 million and it helps fund the care of one in 10 of our patients in the local community.”
