Family member and nurse share powerful stories in latest episode of St Giles Hospice podcast
St Giles Hospice has launched the fourth episode of its podcast series, “We’re Dying to Tell You Something”, featuring a powerful conversation with a family member and a community nurse who share their experiences of hospice care.
We’re Dying to Tell You Something is an important step in breaking down the stigma surrounding conversations about death and dying. In episode four, listeners can hear from Ann Freeman, whose father George spent his final weeks in the care of St Giles in 2023, and Jack Rees, a St Giles community nurse who supports patients, and their loved ones, facing the challenges of end-of-life care.
George became ill after a tumour was discovered on his pancreas. Following the news that he only had days to live, he was admitted to St Giles, where he received care for around three weeks.
Reflecting on that time, Ann said: “The team at St Giles – from the consultants to the cleaners – gave exemplary care to both me and Dad, enabling him to have a peaceful end of life. I remember one of the healthcare assistants ensuring that I looked after myself, even encouraging me to take a moment to eat. Another sat with Dad, holding his hand when he felt worried and alone, something I deeply appreciated.”
Ann hopes that by sharing her story, more people will gain a better understanding of what hospice care really is and the difference it can make to patients and their families. Throughout the episode, she also encourages others to take photographs, make memories and cherish precious moments with loved ones.
The episode also features Jack, who works as a community nurse. During his nurse training, Jack explored a variety of healthcare settings but found fulfilment in supporting patients and their families as they approached end of life.
Jack said: “I absolutely love this job – its amazing!”
Throughout the episode, Jack highlights the vital role of community care, with around 80% of St Giles care delivered in patients own home and local communities.
Leon Ratcliffe, Director of Clinical Services at St Giles Hospice, said: “This episode highlights both the compassionate care that our teams provide and the experiences of the families we support. Ann and Jack offer honest and moving reflections that help break down misconceptions about hospice care and show the difference it can make at one of life’s most difficult times.”
