For Gemma and her family, St Giles Hospice has been a source of support through some life’s most challenging moments for more than a decade.
Their connection with St Giles began in 2016 when Gemma’s mum was diagnosed with cancer, and later in her diagnosis, admitted to the Inpatient Unit at the hospice site in Whittington.
Gemma said: “The care was invaluable to both my mum and to us as a family. She always had people at the end of the phone that she could speak to, and she could access therapies and support whenever she needed it too.
“My mum lived on her own, so knowing that St Giles was an option when she got to the end of her life was critical. At the time, I was also pregnant, so the physical side of caring for mum became harder. Having St Giles there gave us reassurance and support when we needed it most.”
Sadly, Gemma’s mum died in early 2017, but the hospice continued to play an important role in her family’s life.
Just 18 months later, Gemma was diagnosed with breast cancer and turned to the hospice for support.
She said: “Because of my recent experience with the hospice and their services, they were the first people I thought to reach out to for support.
“There isn’t a lot out there for people of my age going through a diagnosis. I found it hugely comforting to be able to St Giles.”
Now living with stage 4 cancer following a secondary diagnosis, Gemma continues to support the hospice that supported her family, knowing she may need their care in the future.
Gemma continued: “St Giles is still an active part of my life. Whilst I’m well, I want to continue raising money for them, but there are times when I’m receiving more active treatment and I know I may need to rely on St Giles to be there for me and my family.
Earlier this year, Gemma’s 10-year-old son, Angelo, took part in the St Giles Keepy-Up Challenge to raise money for the hospice. Although he never met his nan, Gemma says Angelo understands how important St Giles is to their family.
For Gemma, seeing Angelo support the hospice is a special reminder of the lasting impact St Giles has had on their family.
She said: “Mum would be super pleased to see what we’re doing to support St Giles.”
