Throughout October, people are being encouraged to jump in the pool and swim miles to raise vital funds for St Giles in the hospice’s first ever swimming challenge.

‘Swim 4 St Giles’ encourages those taking part to swim 1, 5 or 10 miles throughout the 31 days in October.

Mandy Simpson, age 39, from Tamworth, is taking part to thank St Giles Hospice who helped to care for her brother at the end of his life in 2021.

Mandy’s brother, Martin Simpson, was referred to the Hospice at Home team by his GP when his condition deteriorated, and the family needed further support to care for Martin in the final days of his life.

Mandy said: “I feel like I owe a lot to St Giles after everything they did to support my brother and family. I can’t run or walk long distance, but what I can do is swim.

“I saw the leaflet for the Swim 4 St Giles event and thought that would be the perfect opportunity for me to give something back.”

Mandy continued: “I felt safe whilst the St Giles Hospice at Home team were with us – I’ll never forget how reassured they made me feel.

“I don’t know how I could ever thank St Giles enough – in their eyes, they are at work, but in my eyes, whilst my world was ending, they were there to support me. They put me at the forefront of everything when caring for my brother in the final stages.”

Mandy continues to receive support from St Giles after the death of her brother and last year attended the hospice’s “Light up a Life” service, which gives family and friends the opportunity to remember loved ones and reflect on memories with them.

When speaking about fundraising for St Giles, Mandy said: “I’ve never really done anything like this before, but I’m looking forward to doing it as a small way to say thanks.”

Anyone who signs up to Swim 4 St Giles will be fundraising to support local families, just like Mandy’s. You can sign up to the event throughout any point in October and all participants will also receive their very own St Giles swimming hat.
