A man whose uncle spent his final days at St Giles Hospice is calling on people to sign up for the St Giles Hospice 2023 trek across the Sahara Desert.

In September 2022, Chris Taylor, age 49 from Walsall, raised an impressive £1,765 as part of his 3-day trek up the highest peak in Morocco, Mount Toubkal. Chris’s trek was also in memory of his uncle, Philip Bayliss, who died at St Giles in 2015 after being diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Chris said: “Raising vital funds for St Giles Hospice by doing this trek was my way of saying thank you for all the care they provided to my uncle and family during his end-of-life care. I want St Giles Hospice to be able to continue the love and care they provide to families like mine – I will never be able to do enough for them as a thank you for their excellent work.

After his trek up Mount Tobkal, Chris wants to encourage local people to sign up to the Sahara Desert Adventure information evening taking place on Thursday 10th November at St Giles Hospice in Whittington. People who attend will find out more about the trek itself, what’s included and what support you will receive along the way.

Chris continued: “Being part of the trek in September made me feel excited and gave me a challenge to work towards. I’d encourage anyone to go for it and sign up to the Sahara trek in 2023! You can go walking on your own but walking amongst a group who are all there for the same reason, it is a completely unforgettable experience.

Chloe Hope, Head of Fundraising at St Giles Hospice, said: “We are truly grateful to Chris for raising such vital funds for St Giles Hospice on his most recent trek in Morocco.

“We’d encourage anyone interested in joining the Sahara Desert Adventure to sign up for our information evening in November to find out more. Chris will also be at the open evening, giving people the opportunity to speak to him about his recent trek for St Giles.

“With anyone that takes part in a treks challenge, every step you take, and every pound you can raise, helps us to make a difference to local people, and their families, living with a terminal illness.”
